A door left deliberately open
He plays for Milan. His head is still in Madrid.
Luka Modric sat down with AS on Thursday and settled the question in a single sentence. “Real Madrid is my home and always will be. I will always be a Madridista for everything I experienced there.”
He is talking about coming back once he stops playing. Coach, executive, something not yet invented. He names no role. He says only that he thinks about it, that he intends to make it happen, and that his years in the Spanish capital were the best of his professional and personal life.

He does not want to be a decoration
The interesting part is not the ambition. It is the condition he attaches to it. Modric closed the door on a ceremonial job before anybody had the chance to offer him one. “I would not go back to Real Madrid just for my reputation, without really knowing what I am doing.”
He wants to be useful. He wants the job to matter. And he says he is willing to go and learn the trade first, which is not the standard script at a club where former players tend to get handed titles on the strength of what they did on the pitch. He also leans on a line Jose Mourinho used recently about what working for Real Madrid actually demands of a person.
Thirteen seasons buy a certain amount of credit
Six Champions League titles. A Ballon d’Or in 2018. Thirteen years in the building, through several managers, several squads, several versions of the club. Very few people alive understand Real Madrid from the inside the way Modric does.
Timing is the awkward bit. He is still playing, still in Milan red and black, and he has put no date on the end of any of it. So none of this is imminent. But he has said it in public now, and lines like that tend to sit in the Madrid archive until somebody needs them.
