A referee who swapped the whistle for a desk
Benoit Bastien put the whistle away this summer. That does not mean he has walked away from officiating. The Moselle native now serves as assistant technical director within the refereeing department, working alongside Antony Gautier.
For his first season in the job, he has singled out a clear target: the behaviour that drags matches down. Diving, dissent, and face-to-face confrontations with officials.
“The aim is obviously to move closer to a more play-focused kind of football, not anti-football,” he told RMC Sport. He stressed the need to “fight against this kind of disruptive behaviour.”

Europe is the yardstick, and France is falling short
Bastien is drawing on his recent experience at the top level. He has taken charge in Ligue 1 and in European competition, and says that gives him a clear view from the middle.
In his eyes, the attitude is very different across the border. He has seen “less cheating” and “less exaggeration” in contact. That contrast with the French league is the starting point for his plan.
Captains are about to inherit a headache
The new assistant technical director wants his former colleagues to let matches breathe more. Fewer stoppages. Fewer whistles for harmless contact.
He also wants captains to take on a bigger role. It will be up to them to calm their team-mates rather than let protests spiral around the referee. The idea already exists in several international competitions.
Bastien calls it “a challenge”. The question now is how Ligue 1 players and coaches will react to the tougher line he is promising in the weeks ahead.
