Pro League: Nathanael Mbuku lands at Saint-Trond on loan number four

Four loans in three years

Four. That is how many clubs Augsburg have sent Nathanael Mbuku to since he arrived in Germany. Saint-Etienne. Dinamo Zagreb. Montpellier. And now Saint-Trond.

The Belgian club confirmed on Thursday the arrival of the 24-year-old left winger. Loan with an option to buy. At this stage, the formula is starting to feel painfully familiar.

Reims made him, the Bundesliga misplaced him

Mbuku has not always been the sort of player clubs pass around. A product of the Stade de Reims academy, he came through there before leaving for Augsburg on a free transfer in 2023. On paper, it made sense: a move to the Bundesliga at 21.

It never really got going. Stuck in Germany, the DR Congo international never found a place for himself. Every summer brought the same answer: send him out on loan and try again somewhere else.

Thirty games at Montpellier, and a squad place he has not repaid

Last season was easily the best of the lot. At Montpellier, Mbuku racked up 30 Ligue 2 appearances, scoring four goals and adding five assists. Nothing earth-shattering, but a level of consistency he had not shown since his Reims days.

Enough, at least, to keep him in the DR Congo squad. He was in the team for the last World Cup. At 24, he still carries an international standing that his club career has not exactly earned.

So Saint-Trond is more than just another stopover. The buy option gives him a proper escape route from his German deal, if he can prove himself. The Belgian league has long been a useful launchpad for players like him.

He’ll just need to stay long enough to make it count.
