An hour into a home defeat, and a season gone
RC Lens issued an update on Thursday morning. Maik Nawrocki has suffered a complete anterior cruciate ligament rupture. The Polish defender will go under the knife and is set to miss most of the season.
“Seriously injured, Maik Nawrocki has suffered a complete anterior cruciate ligament rupture and will undergo surgery. Everyone at the club stands with their defender and sends him best wishes for a full recovery,” the club said in its statement.

The staff hoped for a knock, the scans said otherwise
The problem started on Saturday. Lens hosted Strasbourg and lost 2-1. Nawrocki made way for Ruben Aguilar after an hour. The Lens staff had hoped it was nothing more than a knock. The imaging came back with a very different answer.
The 25-year-old Pole arrived this summer from Celtic. He had started every game since the season began. Now his campaign is over after only a handful of matches, before it had even really got going.
Todibo signed on deadline day, and now he has no choice
Lens had worked on their defence right through the end of the transfer window. Jean-Clair Todibo signed on 1 September, in the final hours of the market. Junior Kadile arrived on loan on 31 August. The northern club also tried to land El Chadaille Bitshiabu before that deal slipped away.
Those additions suddenly look far more important. Todibo will have to step up much quicker than expected. The window is shut in France, so there is no emergency replacement available until January.
For Nawrocki, the timeline is harsh. An ACL rupture usually keeps a player out for six to nine months. The Pole will be back at best in the spring, and even then there is no guarantee he walks straight back into the side.
