A set point that never came back

Marta Kostyuk beat Sloane Stephens 6-1, 7-5 on Wednesday to move into the next round at the US Open, ending the tournament of the 2017 champion.

The first set was one-sided. Stephens won a single game in it. The second was a different match. She regrouped, made a real contest of it, worked her way to 5-5 and earned a set point that would have taken the tie into a decider.

She missed it. Kostyuk broke in the following game and served the match out.

Kostyuk’s Grand Slam run continues

The 11th seed arrives in New York on the back of semi-final appearances at the last two majors, and a third in a row is still available to her. That is the number worth holding on to here: two consecutive Grand Slam semi-finals is a level of consistency the women’s draw has not seen much of outside the very top seeds this season.

Stephens, meanwhile, leaves the tournament she won nine years ago. Her second set was proof that the level is still there in stretches. Producing it at 5-5, against a seed in this kind of form, is a different question.
