La Liga: Asencio fined 14,400 euros, loses licence for eight months

0.90 against a limit of 0.25

Nearly four times the legal limit. That was the reading when police stopped Raul Asencio in San Bartolome de Tirajana, on Gran Canaria, on 16 August. A routine check, nothing targeted about it, and a result that left the Real Madrid centre-back no argument to make.

The legal ceiling in Spain sits at 0.25 mg/l. Asencio blew 0.90.

A summary hearing, and a licence gone until spring

Spanish courts dealt with it fast. The verdict: guilty of drink-driving, a 14,400 euro fine and an eight-month driving ban. The money stings less than the ban. He now spends the bulk of a La Liga season unable to drive himself anywhere.

His summer had already been noisy enough. His name did the rounds all window, with a move away from Madrid floated more than once. The market shut last night and he is still a Real Madrid player.

Madrid have said nothing yet

The timing is awkward for the club. Two rounds into the season, with a defence still settling, the staff wanted a centre-back thinking about nothing but football. Instead the questions in the mixed zone will be about a night in the Canaries.

Whether any internal sanction follows is still an open question. Real Madrid have not commented.
