MLB : Cardinals pummel Dodgers 13-8

Five home runs in Los Angeles

St. Louis opened a nine-game road trip with a statement win. The Cardinals beat the Dodgers 13-8 in Los Angeles overnight.

Thomas Saggese launched two homers. Jordan Walker added his own, his 28th of the season. Ramon Urias and Joshua Baez joined the party. Five home runs in all, matching the club’s season high.

The tone was set in the second inning. Urias and Saggese went back-to-back. Then five more runs arrived in the third.

Two strong debuts for the visitors

Leo Bernal was making his MLB debut. Called up on Tuesday when rosters expanded, the Cardinals prospect settled it in his first trip to the plate: a two-run single up the middle.

Michael McGreevy (6-9) worked five innings on the mound. Four runs allowed, five hits, two walks. Nothing flashy, but enough to earn his second win in his last nine outings.

Saggese, though, took a big step forward. He had four homers across 134 games over three seasons. He smashed two in one night.

The Dodgers keep slipping

Los Angeles has now lost five of its last seven games. Eric Lauer (8-7) endured his worst outing since arriving in May: seven runs in three innings, eight hits and one walk.

Mookie Betts tried to limit the damage with two doubles and four RBIs. Will Smith also marked his return after nearly three months out with a neck inflammation, going one for five with two runs driven in.

For the Cardinals, the math is simple. They are back within four games of the National League’s third and final wild-card spot. One month remains to close the gap.
