Twenty-one years old, promoted Tuesday, deep by the fifth
Seattle called Lazaro Montes up from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday and hit him fifth as the designated hitter that same night. He went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs, and led off the fifth inning by driving a solo home run to deep center.
The Mariners won 9-6 in Boston overnight, scoring in each of the first five innings and snapping a five-game losing streak. All nine starters recorded a hit in a 14-hit night. Seattle moved to 65-74.

The second inning settled it
Dominic Canzone opened the scoring with a shot over the bullpens in right-center. Mickey Gasper answered for Boston with a home run to almost the identical spot, and that was the last time the game felt even.
Seattle put up five in the second. Back-to-back hits and a walk loaded the bases, J.P. Crawford lifted a sacrifice fly, Brock Rodden chopped an RBI single over first base, and Randy Arozarena pulled a three-run drive down the left field line. Arozarena has now gone deep in consecutive games.
Montes singled Josh Naylor home in the third. Julio Rodriguez and Cal Raleigh doubled back-to-back in the fourth to make it 8-1 and finish the Boston starter.
Bryan Woo took the win to move to 10-9. Six innings, seven strikeouts, five hits, one walk, two runs and only one of them earned.
A rougher debut in the other dugout
Jedixson Paez was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to start, which made this his first major league appearance and his Red Sox debut at once. He lasted three and two-thirds innings and allowed eight runs on 10 hits, walking two and striking out three. He drops to 0-1.
Boston chipped away once Wyatt Olds steadied things with a 1-2-3 sixth. Wilyer Abreu doubled off the left field wall and scored on an errant throw, Eli White doubled two home into the left field corner in the seventh, and Jahmai Jones pinch-hit a two-run homer in the ninth that forced Andres Munoz off the bench to record the final two outs.
Gasper’s first-inning shot was his seventh home run in his past 13 major league games. Boston fell to 75-64 and has now lost five of seven.
