NHL: Devils trade for Evangelista, Predators bank two picks

Two picks out, one 56-point winger in

New Jersey got the forward it wanted. The Devils announced Tuesday they have acquired Luke Evangelista from Nashville.

The Predators take back draft capital: New Jersey’s 2028 second-rounder, plus a first-round pick the Devils hold via Colorado. That first is still conditional. It cannot end up with Toronto and it cannot land in the top 10.

Fifty-six points, and 16 of the assists on the power play

Evangelista is 24 and coming off the best year of his career. Fifty points for the first time, and then some: 12 goals, 44 assists, 56 points in 81 games. Career highs in games played, assists and points, all at once.

He finished fourth in scoring for Nashville and second in assists. Second on the club in power-play assists too, with 16. That last number is the one New Jersey was shopping for.

A one-year window before the money conversation

Nashville drafted him in the second round in 2020, then gave him four seasons of NHL minutes. He leaves with 45 goals and 97 assists in 253 games.

Now the contract. Evangelista is entering the final year of a two-year, $3 million deal. New Jersey buys a rising winger cheap and inherits an extension negotiation within months.

Nashville’s side is simpler. Trade a forward you developed, collect two picks including a possible first. Resets tend to start like this.
