Cash considerations, and a veteran walks in
Five teams this season. Three organizations. Most of the year spent in the minor leagues. That is the resume Tommy Pham brought to Chicago on Monday, when the White Sox sent cash considerations to the Philadelphia Phillies to acquire the 38-year-old outfielder.
He joins the club today, as rosters expand for September. It is his second stint on the South Side. Pham played 70 games for the White Sox in 2024 and slashed .266/.330/.380 with five home runs and 19 RBIs. His 2026 has been thinner: nine major league games, all with the New York Mets.
Manager Will Venable was not shy about the reasoning. Chicago wanted a right-handed bat to use against left-handed pitching, and Pham is expected to get most of his at-bats in exactly that role.

What the White Sox think they bought
“As you look at it broadly, our need for a right-handed bat versus left-handed pitching is something that we’re really excited about,” Venable said. “And then the human being, the teammate, the edge that he brings, who he is as a total player, I think he’s going to make a big impact here.”
The numbers behind the second half of that sentence are the interesting ones. Pham has 1,250 major league games across 13 seasons. He also carries 136 postseason plate appearances with five different clubs, and an .823 OPS across 37 playoff games. For a roster this young, that is not a small import.
“He’s been in every situation, and he understands what it means to be in meaningful games down the stretch,” Venable said. “He knows what it means to play playoff games.”
A month that decides the season
Chicago sits at 72-65 and opened a four-game series in Houston on Monday, a second straight defeat after four consecutive wins. Right-hander Sean Burke (7-6, 3.32 ERA) takes the ball Tuesday. He has gone four straight starts without a decision and is 0-2 with a 3.68 ERA over his past seven.
Pham will not fix a rotation. He was never meant to. What Chicago added on Monday was one right-handed bat and thirteen seasons of scar tissue.
