South Korea name Robert Moreno interim head coach until November

A deal that runs out on November 27

Three months. Not a day longer, unless something changes.

The South Korean federation announced on Tuesday that Spaniard Robert Moreno has been named interim head coach after the departure of Hong Myung-bo. The deal runs until November 27. The KFA said the appointment was made “through a public hiring process”. That is not something you see every day for a national team job.

Moreno will take charge of six matches. Ecuador on September 24, Uruguay on the 28th, Venezuela on October 2, Uzbekistan on the 6th, then two more games in November still to be scheduled.

An opening to the Asian Cup

Interim does not have to mean dead end. If Moreno gets results across those six games, his stay could be extended through the Asian Cup, set for January 7 to February 5 2027.

In other words, the KFA has quietly handed him a trial period. Six friendlies, no points on the line, and a call to make at the end of November. For a coach out of work, it is hardly a bad offer.

A career of peaks and dips

Moreno is no stranger. Longtime assistant to Luis Enrique, at Barcelona and then with Spain, he took over La Roja in 2019 before a dramatic split with his former mentor. He later coached Monaco and Granada, among others, but those spells were short and often ended abruptly.

South Korea is offering him something different. A national team job, a shot at the Asian Cup and three months to prove himself. Not much time at all.
