Four hits, four RBIs
Bryce Eldridge matched his career highs overnight Saturday into Sunday. Four hits, four RBIs, and a 7-2 win for the San Francisco Giants over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Giants had dropped the opener 7-1. The nightcap turned in the fifth inning, with the score tied 1-1.
Grant McCray singled, Osleivis Basabe drew a walk, and Christian Koss laid down a sacrifice bunt. Drew Gilbert then worked a walk off Gerardo Carrillo to load the bases. Rafael Devers drove in the go-ahead run with a single, and Eldridge followed with a two-run hit. 4-1, and that was that.

A rookie on the mound, a number in the rafters
The evening started with Jeff Kent’s number retirement ceremony, honoring the Giants’ second baseman from 1997 to 2002. Handy timing for the club’s memory lane: it was a major league debutant who held things together a few minutes later.
Yunior Marte, called up from Double-A Richmond, threw four and two-thirds innings in his debut. One run, three hits, two walks, three strikeouts. On the other side, rookie Mitch Bratt allowed three runs in four and a third innings and fell to 1-3.
The win went to Reiver Sanmartin, who faced just one batter. He struck out Lars Nootbaar with two outs in the fifth, right before San Francisco pulled away. Nootbaar had been the hero in the first game.
What the split means in the wild-card race
Even in defeat, Arizona did decent business. The Diamondbacks are back level, in effect, with the San Diego Padres, who lost in Tampa Bay, in the battle for third place in the National League wild-card race. With a month left in the regular season, every split feels bigger than it should.
The head-to-head picture still favors Arizona. This loss is only their third in 13 meetings with the Giants this season.
San Francisco, meanwhile, ends its homestand at four wins and three losses. Devers and Eldridge drove in both eighth-inning runs, with Gilbert scoring after his second straight walk. Basabe crossed the plate twice, while Ildemaro Vargas had two hits for Arizona.
The two teams get a day off on Sunday, a rarity in late August.
