MLS: Muller torments Sporting KC again as Whitecaps win 3-0

Two meetings this year, two 3-0 wins, same man on the scoresheet

Thomas Muller does not seem to need much motivation against Sporting Kansas City. He converted from the spot in the 40th minute and turned provider in the 90th as Vancouver won 3-0 in Kansas overnight, an exact replay of the scoreline from the April 17 meeting in British Columbia, where Muller also scored.

The penalty came from a Justin Reynolds challenge on Bruno Caicedo. Muller did the rest. Seventh of the season for the German, second in the club’s scoring charts.

White was a doubt on Friday and scored three minutes into the second half

A thigh problem had left Brian White’s involvement uncertain right up to the trip. He came out after the interval and finished off an Oliver Larraz pass into the middle of the box in the 48th minute. Thirteen goals now, more than anyone else on the roster.

Rayan Elloumi closed it out in the 90th, heading in a Muller cross for his second of the campaign. Yohei Takaoka kept another clean sheet behind them. Vancouver, 13-4-4 and on 43 points, hold their place at the top of the Western Conference.

Twenty-eight points, and six games without a win

Sporting are 4-15-3 on 15 points, bottom of the West, with nothing resembling form to point to. Stefan Cleveland made three saves. Against a Vancouver side that scored right before half-time, right after it, and again in the final seconds, three saves was never going to be the difference.

Fifteen points against 43. The gap between these two clubs has been growing since spring and nothing about Saturday suggested it will narrow.
