Eighteen goals in six games, then a night with nothing to do
Angus Gunn had conceded 18 times across his first six MLS starts. On his seventh, in Houston, he did not have to make a save. Not one. The Dynamo failed to put a single shot on target and San Jose walked out with a 0-0 draw and the goalkeeper’s first clean sheet in the league.
Jonathan Bond had the busier evening at the other end. Four stops for the Houston keeper, and a ninth shutout of the season, six of those coming in his last seven appearances.

The Earthquakes at least stopped the bleeding. Four consecutive defeats came to an end, though a win still has not arrived since the competition resumed after the World Cup break. August has been grim: four losses in five.
Two points from seven matches, both from draws. And yet San Jose, 10-8-4 on 34 points, are still fourth in the West, which says something about the conference behind them.
Houston sit second at 12-7-3 and 39 points, but they have taken one point from their last two. The eight-game unbeaten run, six wins and two draws, ran out at Saint-Louis on 22 August.
The visitors won every number except the one that counts
Twelve shots to nine. Possession 52.1%. Five hundred and nineteen passes against 374, at 88.3% accuracy to 82.6%. It bought San Jose nothing.
Ousseni Bouda produced the only shot on target of the first half, in the 14th minute, and Bond pushed it clear. Felipe Andrade should have done better with a header in the 34th, which went wide. Reid Roberts and Eduard Lowen tried in the 54th and 56th, Bond dealt with both, and Nick Fernandez’s effort in the 77th ended the same way.
