Forty minutes a man short, and they still won by two
San Diego FC have never lost to the Los Angeles Galaxy. Three meetings since the expansion side joined MLS, three wins, and Friday’s 3-1 at home was the strangest of them, because they played the last 40 minutes with ten.
Both clubs arrived just outside the playoff line. Only one leaves inside it. San Diego are 8-8-6 on 30 points. The Galaxy, 6-9-8 and 26 points, are still looking up.
Elias Achouri opened it in the 11th minute with a header from an Anders Dreyer cross off the byline. Kieran Sargeant added the second three minutes after the restart, his first goal in MLS.

Lozano came back, scored, and it did not matter
Hirving Lozano’s return to San Diego was always going to be awkward after the way he left the club earlier this month. On loan at Los Angeles, making his fourth appearance and second start, he got his first goal for them in the 55th, five minutes after Jeppe Tverskov picked up a second yellow and walked.
That red should have changed everything. The Galaxy thought it had when Kyogo Furuhashi found the net in the 61st, but VAR ruled it out for a Lozano foul in the build-up.
Three matches in a row now with a Galaxy player dismissed. They were already missing first-choice keeper JT Marcinkowski, sent off last week against CF Montreal. Novak Micovic deputised and made three saves.
Seven saves from dos Santos, and a goal that summed up the night
CJ dos Santos was the difference. Seven stops while his team defended a lead with ten men for most of the second half, and only one got past him.
Amahl Pellegrino finished it in the 70th, running on to a long ball that had somehow gone through Harbor Miller’s legs.
San Diego are 3-1-0 since going out of the Leagues Cup. Four points now separate the two clubs in the West.
