The coach’s gamble
Some deals never make it onto paper. This one fits into a single line: if Ruoning Yin makes birdie on the final hole, her coach buys her an ice cream.
Overnight in Norton, Massachusetts, the Chinese player holed her chip at the 18th at TPC Boston. Birdie. Another one on the tab.
“My coach told me if I made birdie on the last hole, he’d buy me an ice cream, and I think we’re up to 10 now,” she said. Favourite flavour? Cookies and cream. Second choice, mint choc chip. She did not say which one she will be asking for this time.

Two bogeys, six birdies, and top spot anyway
The scorecard matters more than the ice cream story. Yin posted a 68, four under par, after opening with bogeys at the 1st and the 4th. She answered with birdies at 2, 6, 9, 12, 16 and 18.
Halfway through the weekend she sits 12 under, one clear of the field going into the final day of the FM Championship.
She is 23, with five career wins and two runner-up finishes already this season. “Patience,” she said. “My coach and I had a long chat earlier in the week and we both knew it was coming.”
One shot back, and three South Koreans in the way
Hyo Joo Kim, who shared the first-round lead, signed for a 70 with four birdies and two bogeys. She is tied for second at 11 under with compatriot Sei Young Kim, whose 67 was chaos in the best way: five birdies, an eagle, a double bogey. “I mainly want to make sure I hit the greens tomorrow so I can roll in my putts,” Hyo Joo Kim said.
Somi Lee and Jenny Bae follow at 8 under. Friday’s leaders had a rougher time of it. Allisen Corpuz went round in 74 and slipped to 7 under. Japan’s Miyu Yamashita shot 75 and is 12th at 6 under, five off the pace with 18 holes to play.
