Two hits flipped it
Baltimore waited until the 10th inning to make it count. Coby Mayo and Christian Encarnacion-Strand each drove in a run with singles on Thursday night in West Sacramento, and the Orioles beat the Athletics 4-3.
It turned in a matter of minutes. Two on, two out, and Mayo lined a single off Brady Basso. Carlos Narvaez, the automatic runner who started at second, scored. Gunnar Henderson, in as the extra runner, came home behind him on Encarnacion-Strand’s single.
Alex Hoppe then gave up a run in the bottom of the 10th on Zack Gelof’s two-out RBI single. He got Lawrence Butler to ground out to pick up the first save of his career.

Brandon Young keeps holding it together
Baltimore’s starter went seven innings and allowed one run. Five hits, one walk, four strikeouts. The only blemish was Jonah Heim’s 12th homer of the season in the seventh.
The number that matters: the Orioles are 18-5 in games Young starts this season. On a rotation that has been patched up more than once, he’s the steadiest piece they have.
Andrew Kittredge worked a scoreless ninth and got the win, his third of the year against three losses.
A game the Athletics let slip away
Baltimore got to work early. In the second, Dylan Beavers drove Mayo home with a single to right, then Narvaez hit a slow roller that Jacob Lopez failed to handle, allowing Leody Taveras to score. Two runs, one of them unearned.
Lopez finished after five innings, giving up three hits, throwing 100 pitches, walking three and striking out six. Reliever Scott Blewett put out a fire in the sixth, when Colton Cowser doubled before Narvaez was erased on a groundout.
The Athletics clawed back twice. Heim did it first. Butler did it next, in the eighth, with a single to left off Rico Garcia. On the same play, Jeff McNeil was thrown out trying to score. The tying run got through. The go-ahead one didn’t.
The Orioles have won three of their last four.
