Arsenal’s farewell message dropped on social media at Friday lunchtime. Three words, one photo, one thank you. Reiss Nelson is no longer a Gunners player.
The 26-year-old winger has agreed with the club to be released from the final year of his contract. He leaves on a free. With days left in the window, the door has opened for him as much as for Arsenal.
Nelson arrived at Hale End as a kid. He grew up there and signed pro there. He walks away having never nailed down a regular spot in the first XI.

Talent was never the issue. Minutes were. Each season away nudged Nelson a little further from a dressing room where the attacking competition kept getting harder.
At 26, he is at the point where a winger needs to settle somewhere. Free-agent status hands him one clear selling point: no fee for whoever takes him on.
Marseille asked once already
Marseille made an offer to Arsenal roughly two weeks ago, according to Foot Mercato. The English club did not bite at the time.
The picture has changed. Nelson can now talk to anyone he likes, with no say from north London. Whether Marseille’s interest survives a window this busy is another matter. Nothing suggests the file has been reopened.
