WNBA: Aaliyah Edwards drops career-high 26 in return as Sun beat Sky

26 points after four games out

Aaliyah Edwards had missed four games with an ankle injury. She came back with a career-high 26 points, and the Connecticut Sun beat the Chicago Sky 87-81 overnight in Uncasville.

The third-year center went 11-for-16 from the floor and grabbed 10 rebounds, her best total of the season. Her previous high had come on June 10: 24 points in a 106-102 overtime loss to the Toronto Tempo. That one brought no reward. This one brought a win, the Sun’s third in their last 12 games.

Connecticut was short-handed too. Brittney Griner missed a fifth straight game with a knee injury. So did Olivia Nelson-Ododa. Diamond Miller stepped up with 21 points, including four threes, and Kennedy Burke added 19.

0-for-12 from deep, and the first half was already gone

Chicago missed all 12 of its attempts from beyond the arc in the first half. Twelve for 12. The team finished 6-for-29 from long range, and that alone tells the story of the final margin.

Kamilla Cardoso did what she could around the rim: 24 points, 13 rebounds. Azura Stevens added 18. But Natasha Cloud, the Sky’s leading scorer, managed just three points before shutting it down in the second half with a knee injury.

The Sky still made a run. Down 80-62 with 6:47 left after a Saniya Rivers jumper, Chicago ripped off a 17-2 burst powered by two threes from Stevens and one from Courtney Vandersloot. It was back to 82-79 with 2:20 to play.

Two free throws, a block, and the run was dead

Miller killed the momentum with two free throws at 1:52, then Edwards followed with a block and a layup. Connecticut is now 10-27, Chicago 15-24. The playoffs are out of reach for both teams, after Dallas locked up the eighth and final spot last night.

Which leaves Edwards. Twenty-seven losses in, with nothing left to play for in the standings, a career night from a third-year center is about the only thing Connecticut can take out of the rest of this season.
