Champions League: Celtic blow three-goal lead and crash out to LASK

A three-goal cushion, gone in 120 minutes

Three goals. That was the lead Celtic carried into Linz, and it lasted about an hour of football before it stopped meaning anything. The Scottish champions lost 5-1 after extra time and will watch the league phase from home.

The opening went to script. Celtic struck early, settled, and looked like a side managing a tie rather than fighting for one. Then LASK scored. Then they scored again, and again, and again. Four goals wiped out everything Celtic had built at home, the aggregate flattened out, and extra time gave the Austrians the room to add a fifth and finish the job.

Nine years old and into Europe’s biggest club competition

Sabah Baku were founded in 2017. On Tuesday night they qualified for the Champions League for the first time, and they did it the hard way, trailing 2-1 from the first leg before winning the return 5-2.

Bodo/Glimt had a quieter evening. The Norwegians led 3-1 from the first leg and simply added to it, winning 3-0 against opponents down to ten men. Six-one on aggregate. No drama, no late scare, just a team that has been here before doing what it knows.

Four tickets left before the draw

Wednesday closes the play-off round with four second legs, all at 21:00 CET, and every one of them is level. AEK Athens host Levski Sofia after a goalless first leg. Celje welcome Slovan Bratislava off a 1-1. Viking face Dinamo Zagreb, 2-2 from Croatia. Lyon meet Fenerbahce, also 1-1.

Four places. Nothing decided in any of them.
