A backing from Cameroon
Not many saw that one coming.
Samuel Eto’o picked CNN to come out fighting for Gianni Infantino. The interview aired on Monday. The president of the Cameroon Football Federation did not hold back.
His take on the current revolt came down to one line: “This all happened because there are elections coming up.”

“He has changed football”
Eto’o kept coming back to the record. “He has helped our continent. He has helped our federations grow much faster, and we must recognise that. We should support him for everything he has done so far.”
Then came the line that sums up his stance: “President Gianni Infantino has changed football.”
The head of world football’s governing body has been under fire for weeks. His idea of handing part of World Cup rights to private investors sparked the backlash. In the end, it was dropped.
The private plan could return
Eto’o is not ruling it out. He even thinks it will resurface if Infantino is re-elected next year.
“I remain convinced that, for us as Africans, this project could have been something extraordinary. It would have helped rebalance the power in football, so that our talent does not disappear and end up playing for other nations.”
The former Barca striker is talking money, development and talent drain. His critics will see a self-serving defence with an election only months away. His supporters will hear an African voice that has finally broken through in a debate dominated by Europe.
