Four seasons, maybe five, for a player who has never left Europe
Minnesota United have their striker. The club confirmed Monday that Maurice Malone is joining from SK Sturm Graz, with the 26-year-old German swapping Austria for Major League Soccer.
His contract runs through 2029-2030, with a club option for a further year. That is a long runway for a forward stepping outside European football for the first time in his career.

47 goals and 32 assists, mostly out of sight
Malone has never been a headline name. Since 2020 he has played 192 senior matches for Sturm Graz, Austria Vienna, Basel and Wolfsberger AC, putting up 47 goals and 32 assists along the way.
Read those two numbers together and the appeal becomes obvious. He scores roughly every fourth appearance. He also creates almost as often as he finishes, which is unusual for a centre forward and precisely what Minnesota went looking for.
The part nobody can model
Three leagues, four clubs, six seasons. The football pedigree is not in doubt.
North America is a different problem. Flights that eat entire days, summer heat in cities Malone has never played in, a calendar that looks nothing like Austria or Switzerland. Plenty of European forwards have arrived with better numbers than his and never worked it out.
