A straight loan, not a sale
Forty million euros in the summer of 2023. Three loan spells since. According to Foot Mercato, Axel Disasi is due to have his medical this afternoon with Crystal Palace, the last box to tick before the deal goes through. The two clubs have already agreed terms.
The structure says plenty. A season-long paid loan, no option to buy. Chelsea keep hold of their defender and Palace are tied to nothing beyond next June.
That detail matters more than it looks. Nobody wants to buy a 28-year-old France international centre-back. Everyone just wants a look.

Crystal Palace would be the third stop on loan since Disasi fell out of Chelsea’s plans. The pattern repeats because the situation is deadlocked on both sides: the Blues no longer want the player, and his contract and wages make a clean sale a hard job.
At 28, a centre-back is meant to be settling somewhere. Not packing a bag every six months. Disasi played in the Champions League with Monaco and at the 2022 World Cup with France, and his path since Stamford Bridge reads nothing like that.
Palace have a real hole at the back
The need is genuine. Maxence Lacroix joined Chelsea this summer and left Selhurst Park short in central defence, so the two clubs end up in a kind of indirect swap: Palace sell their defender to the Blues, then take on loan the man Chelsea no longer want.
Pierre Sage lost his first game in charge against Everton, and the middle of the back line was one of the areas under the microscope. An experienced body arrives at the right moment, though how sharp he is remains anyone’s guess.
All that is left is the medical. Until it clears, nothing is signed.
