A fourth-tier side did this
Tom Kanowski should have scored after seven minutes. Free at the far post, header, right upright. Five minutes later Heidenheim led, and everyone in the Marschweg-Stadion knew how these afternoons usually end.
This one ended differently. SSV Jeddeloh II beat 1. FC Heidenheim 5-2 earlier today in Oldenburg. Jeddeloh play in the Regionalliga Nord, the fourth tier of German football. Heidenheim spent last season in the Bundesliga before dropping into the second division. They are out of the cup after one round.
Marvin Pieringer made the opener look routine, holding off Kanowski on the left byline and rolling the ball back for Yannik Wagner to finish from close range on 12 minutes. Two minutes later it was level. A long throw bounced around the Heidenheim box, nobody cleared it, and Kamer Krasniqi curled his shot into the far corner.

Two minutes that broke Heidenheim
The tie turned between the 27th and 29th minutes. Krasniqi crossed, Jan Schoeppner sliced his clearance into his own net, and Haris Hyseni then struck from the right edge of the penalty area into the top left corner. Frank Feller barely moved. Half-time: 3-1 to the fourth division.
Heidenheim had their route back. Budu Zivzivadze, on at the break, went down under a challenge from Gazi Siala and took the penalty himself on 58 minutes. Moritz Onken read it, saved it, held it.
Hyseni made them pay. Feller brought down Tim Janssen, Hyseni sent the keeper one way and the ball the other on 70 minutes, and two minutes later Janssen ran onto a long ball and pushed it through Feller’s legs. Mikkel Kaufmann pulled one back in the 89th minute.
Company nobody wants to keep
Jeddeloh are the first fourth-tier club into round two this season. The historical company is thin. Only Berliner AK, who beat Hoffenheim 4-0 back in 2012, had previously taken a professional side apart by four goals from the Regionalliga.
Heidenheim now face a second-division season that starts with the cheapest kind of headline. Their squad cost multiples of what Jeddeloh spend in a year, and they conceded five to a club whose home ground could not host the tie.
In the parallel game, Bochum won 2-1 at Greuther Fuerth in the only first-round meeting of two second-division clubs.
