Golf: Jamieson wins 14 years after his first title

Fourteen years. Almost.

That is the number that survives Sunday. Scott Jamieson won the Nexo Championship, his second DP World Tour title. The first arrived at the end of 2012.

Everything in between is a career. Cards lost, cards won back, Sunday afternoons that got away from him. This time he finished two clear at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire.

Close to home, as it happens. A few miles from the North Sea, on a links the wind worked over all week.

A course built to punish

Trump International had a reputation for cruelty before this week, and it did nothing to soften it. Scoring stayed low, in the sense that nobody ran away with anything. Dunes, tight fairways and gusts wore the field down across four rounds.

Setups like that do not reward distance. They reward whoever limits the damage. Jamieson has done that for years without converting it into trophies.

The tournament ran 20 to 23 August. A Scot winning in Scotland is rarer on this tour than it ought to be.

What the win actually buys him

Prize money is the least of it. A DP World Tour victory carries exemption status covering several seasons, points toward the year-end standings, and entry into events that a player in his late thirties does not get handed back once he loses them.

For someone who spent much of the last decade fighting to keep his playing rights, that Sunday was worth a great deal more than the cheque.

The schedule moves on next week regardless. Jamieson can take a moment first.
