A manager praising one of his own players in a press conference is filler. A manager praising him and then, in the next sentence, explaining why the club might sell him anyway is something else.
Filipe Luis was asked about Lamine Camara on Saturday, the day before Monaco opened their Ligue 1 season at Le Havre. He went to the money first. “When you see the sums being paid for midfielders around the world… I obviously hope he stays with me this year.”
Then he laid it on thick. “If he stays, he can keep improving on the ball. Off the ball, he’s already at an exceptional level, really fantastic. Above all because of his character: he has an exemplary mentality for the team. He always sacrifices himself for the collective. I absolutely want to keep him, because I know this kind of profile is rare in football.”

Camara is 22, capped by Senegal, and very much on the radar in England. Foot Mercato listed Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, Manchester United and Liverpool a fortnight ago. Chelsea have since been added.
None of it is signed. None of it is even confirmed. But five clubs from the same league circling one midfielder with the deadline this close usually ends somewhere.

Thursday in Poland, Camara ran the game in Monaco’s 3-2 win at Gornik Zabrze in the first leg of the Europa Conference League play-off. Performances like that reassure a coach and raise an asking price in the same 90 minutes.
Monaco have run the same model for years. Sign young, develop, sell high, repeat. Filipe Luis understands the machine he is working inside. Saying out loud that he wants the player to stay may be the only lever he actually has.
