WNBA: Reese drops a career-high 31 as Atlanta clinches a playoff berth

31 and 14, and a ticket punched

Angel Reese had never scored 31 in a WNBA game. She got there in Phoenix, added 14 boards on top, and the Dream walked out with a 99-89 win and a playoff spot.

Atlanta did not trail once. Rhyne Howard opened with two straight threes to trigger a 14-3 run inside the first six minutes, and by the break it was 50-35, Howard sitting on 14 points at 4 of 8 from deep.

The Georgia franchise is 24-13. Five wins in six, four of them on the road, which is the kind of stretch that tends to decide where a team is sitting in October.

Fourth place is worth actual money

Seven games left and Atlanta hold fourth. The top four get home court in the opening round, so this is not a team that can coast to the finish.

Allisha Gray chipped in 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. Between her, Reese and Howard, the Dream finally have an offensive hierarchy, which they have gone several seasons without.

38 from Copper and Phoenix are still done

The Mercury’s season ended on this night. At 13-24 and a fifth loss in six, Phoenix are mathematically out.

Kahleah Copper went for 38, her 19th time leading the team in scoring this year. Her and-one in the third pulled it back to 57-52 before Howard hit a buzzer-beater to stretch it out again.

Alyssa Thomas had a triple-double, 11 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists, and crossed 3,000 career rebounds along the way. She sits on 3,010 across 13 seasons, a number almost nobody in this league reaches.

Naz Hillmon’s three with 7:55 to go made it 79-70 and that was the game.
