Real Salt Lake are rolling the dice on experience
Georginio Wijnaldum could carry on his career on the other side of the Atlantic. The Athletic report that the Dutch midfielder has been in contact with Real Salt Lake, who want to strengthen before the US window shuts on 2 September. He is said to be intrigued by the project and open to MLS. Nothing is close yet.
At 35, Wijnaldum has been a free agent since leaving Al-Ettifaq this summer after nearly three seasons in Saudi Arabia. No fee to haggle over. That is never irrelevant for a franchise working under salary rules.

A resume that still carries weight
237 appearances in a Liverpool shirt. A Champions League. A Premier League title. 96 caps for the Netherlands. Few free agents came to market this summer with a record anywhere near that.

Salt Lake are not alone in the chase
Al-Jazira have made their move too, according to Foot Mercato. The UAE club can offer financial muscle that MLS does not always match for a player of this age.
From the American side the need is clear. Real Salt Lake want to cover the departure of Zavier Gozo to Crystal Palace. Bringing in a 35-year-old to replace a teenager sold to the Premier League says plenty about where the club sits right now.
