Monaco have the player on side
AS Monaco have an agreement in principle with Jordy Makengo. Sky Germany broke the story. Freiburg’s left-back wants the move to the Principality.
His mind is made up. He is pushing to sample Ligue 1 in Monaco colours. One hurdle cleared, then, but plenty more still to come.
Monaco have been chasing a left-back for several weeks. The position has become the club’s top priority in the closing stretch of the window.

Freiburg have not opened the door
The German club are standing firm. Freiburg are not yet ready to let their defender go, and Monaco now have to find common ground on the terms of the deal.
Monaco’s financial room to manoeuvre remains tight. They are already struggling to close the file on Algerian winger Farès Ghedjemis. Two jobs on the go, one squeezed budget.
A left flank stripped bare
Caio Henrique has joined Ajax. Kassoum Ouattara has left for Besiktas. Monaco lost both of their senior options on that side this summer and have to plug the gap before deadline day.
Makengo ticks plenty of boxes. Developed at AJ Auxerre, he moved to Freiburg in 2021, forced his way through the reserve side and then earned a place in the senior squad. Last season he played 33 games in all competitions and provided two assists.
French academy background, a few years of Bundesliga football, still room to grow. The hard part is what comes next: getting Freiburg to budge.
