A designated player for a side that has stopped winning
The San Jose Earthquakes have agreed a deal to sign midfielder Eduard Lowen from St. Louis City, according to multiple reports. St. Louis collect $425,000 in general allocation money, with another $500,000 available in add-ons.
Lowen, 29, arrives as a designated player. His contract is guaranteed only through the end of the season, with a club option for next year.
San Jose sit fourth in the Western Conference on 33 points from an 11-7-3 record, and they have not won a match since the league restarted after the World Cup break. The German international is meant to fix that.

He asked to leave
Lowen raised his long-term future with St. Louis earlier in the year. The club told him it would not discuss options or extensions before the summer. He responded by asking them to find him a permanent destination elsewhere.
His record in Missouri carries weight. Lowen joined ahead of the club’s first MLS season in 2023 and has made 84 regular-season appearances, scoring 20 goals and setting up 27 more. This season he has three goals and three assists.
San Jose get a midfielder who creates volume rather than one who chases a single number, which suits a team scrapping for a playoff position rather than rebuilding.
St. Louis still have work to do
The move leaves St. Louis (9-6-6, 33 points) with a designated player slot open and a transfer window that runs to Sept. 2. Reports point to a centre forward as the priority.
They have already reshaped that part of the squad, letting Marcel Hartel go before adding designated player Carlo Holse in July.
