Three minutes that broke Miami open
Nothing for fifty-nine minutes. Then Toronto scored twice before the hour was properly done.
Josh Sargent got the first overnight, the rookie’s fourth of the season, from a Daniel Salloi and Derrick Etienne Jr. combination. Etienne took care of the second himself three minutes later, unassisted, his third of the year. Toronto had never won in Miami before. They led 2-0 and the home crowd had gone quiet.
Lionel Messi pulled one back in the 82nd minute. Fourteenth goal of the season, sixty-fourth in seventy-one appearances for the club. It arrived eight minutes too late to change the result.

A bad August getting worse
Inter Miami have lost four of their last five. Their August reads 0-2-2. For a side sitting on 11-4-6 overall that stretch is not a crisis, but it is the kind of run that turns a comfortable seeding position into a nervous one with the regular season closing.
Dayne St. Clair did not make a save all night, which says more about how Toronto scored than about how little they created. Both goals came from close range, from positions where a goalkeeper is largely a spectator.
Toronto find something on the road
Luka Gavran needed only two saves at the other end and held the clean sheet until Messi’s late intervention. Toronto move to 5-7-9, a record that still leaves them chasing, though a first away win against this opponent is the sort of result a struggling season is built back from.
Sargent is the name worth tracking. Four goals as a rookie in a league that does not hand them out cheaply, and the composure to take the biggest of them in front of the loudest crowd he will see this year.
