Three runs before he recorded three outs
Pittsburgh hung three on Tarik Skubal in the first inning. Dodger Stadium went quiet in the way it does when a very expensive acquisition looks like it might not work.
Then he retired 20 of the next 23 hitters.
Seven innings, 11 strikeouts, three runs, five hits, one walk. Los Angeles won 4-3, and the left-hander finally has a win in blue.

Tucker’s fifth inning
The Dodgers’ bats took a while. Kyle Tucker sorted that out with one swing in the fifth, a two-RBI hit that tied the game and put Los Angeles in front on the same play.
Skubal is 8-7 on the year. His first three starts since the trade produced two losses and a 3.18 ERA, numbers most pitchers would sign for and nowhere near what this one is paid to deliver.
Los Angeles gave up a serious package to pry the two-time Cy Young winner out of Detroit at the deadline. Nobody makes that trade for a 3.18 ERA in August.
August was never the point
The regular season is nearly gone. This rotation was assembled with a specific month in mind, and it is not this one.
Eleven strikeouts is the number that matters here. That is the pitcher Detroit decided it could not keep.
