La Liga: Sevilla stun Athletic Bilbao 3-1 at San Mames

Six minutes after the break, the game was gone

San Mames is one of the hardest away trips in Spain. Sevilla turned up on opening weekend and scored three.

The 3-1 win started slowly. Oso struck in the 15th minute and that was the whole first half, one goal, few clues about what was coming.

The second period detonated. Chidera Ejuke made it two on 51 minutes. Isaac added a third on 57. Two goals in six minutes and Athletic Bilbao were finished.

A centre-back scoring off a centre-back’s assist

Aitor Paredes pulled one back in the 70th, set up by Yeray Alvarez. When your consolation comes from that combination, the forward line has had a quiet afternoon.

The Basques had 20 minutes to find something. They never got close. Carlos Soto blew for time after three minutes of stoppage.

Bilbao open the season on zero points, minus two on goal difference, beaten at a ground where visiting sides usually leave with nothing.

Three different scorers, and a window still open

Three away goals to start a campaign do not come around every year. Sevilla found them through three different players, two arriving exactly when Athletic were trying to climb back into it.

Ejuke and Isaac carried the threat. Oso set it all in motion. The Andalusians are still chasing attacking reinforcements before the window shuts.

Matchday two will say more.
