German Cup: Leipzig hammer Trier 6-0 in Demichelis’s first game

Six minutes, two goals, game over

Trier’s fans barely had time to finish their first beer.

Brajan Gruda struck in the 2nd minute. Willi Orbán doubled the lead in the 6th. The tie was effectively over before anyone had settled into their seat. RB Leipzig won 6-0 away at Eintracht Trier on Saturday night in the first round of the German Cup, and it could have been even uglier.

Ridle Baku added a third in first-half stoppage time. Three up at the break, a second-half rout. Trier never got a look in.

Demichelis gets off to a calm start

This was Demichelis’s first competitive match in charge of Leipzig. Hard to imagine a more comfortable start. His side pressed high from the opening whistle, took full advantage of the gap in quality and never let up.

The Saxon club knows exactly what this competition can do for it. The German Cup often offers the quickest route into Europe for a team that has to scrap every season in the Bundesliga against Bayern. The message sent on Saturday was loud and clear.

For Trier, this was the annual trip to face the big boys. The Rhineland club came through its regional cup and knew what was coming. At that level, the payday is the real prize.

A first round that caused plenty of damage

Saturday’s action did not throw up many shocks. Hannover 96 put nine past Hemelingen, while Bayer Leverkusen handled business with a 4-0 win in Wiesbaden. Hertha Berlin needed penalties in Saarbrücken after being pegged back in the closing minutes.

Nobody left Trier with any doubts about Leipzig.
