WNBA: Kelsey Mitchell hits 20 points in 20 straight games

Twenty straight games with 20 points

Six minutes and three seconds were left in the third quarter when Kelsey Mitchell drove the lane for a layup. Nothing spectacular about it. That bucket, though, handed her the WNBA record for most consecutive 20-point games in a single season, and the number now sits at 20.

Mitchell finished with 29 on Tuesday night as the Indiana Fever beat the Toronto Tempo 101-95, a fifth win in a row for the franchise. She went to the locker room late in the fourth and never came back out.

Caitlin Clark added 24 points and seven assists. Aliyah Boston finished with 16 points, while Sophie Cunningham had 13. The Fever are now 24-12.

Toronto takes an 11th straight loss

The Tempo shot 39.1% compared with Indiana’s 52.9%. That gap was there all night, and it told. Toronto is now 10-24 and has dropped 11 in a row.

Marina Mabrey led the team with 22 points. Brittney Sykes made her return from a foot injury and scored 15. Aneesah Morrow grabbed 16 rebounds and added 14 points, Temi Fagbenle scored 13 and Kiki Rice had 10.

A tense finish

Indiana led 33-23 after the first quarter, shooting 61.9%. The margin was 57-49 at halftime, then 81-69 after the third, closed out by a 9-2 run.

The Fever were up by 14 after Cunningham knocked down three free throws with 6:45 left. Then Indiana’s offence went cold. Toronto cut it to seven with 2:55 to play. A Makayla Timpson steal led to a Cunningham three and pushed the lead back to 10 with 1:25 left.

Mabrey hit back-to-back three-pointers to get the Tempo within 97-93 with 59 seconds remaining. After an Indiana miss, Toronto got the ball back with 21 seconds left. Mabrey was called for a dribble violation, then Rice was whistled for a foul. That was that.
