The master of space and time lands in Catalonia
Barcelona wanted a statement signing. It has gone and made one. On Tuesday, the Catalan club confirmed Rodri’s arrival from Manchester City. At 30, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner swaps England for Spain and starts a fresh chapter in his career. The deal is worth around 70 million euros, bonuses included.

Seven years on top at Manchester City
For Manchester City, though, it is the end of the road.
The English club confirmed Rodri’s departure at the same time, saying he leaves the Etihad after seven “magnificent and successful” years. Neat wording, sure. But it still closes the book on a spell that helped define the Pep Guardiola era.
After arriving in Manchester in 2019 from Atletico Madrid, Rodri steadily became the metronome for City. Not always the one grabbing the headlines, but always the one everything seemed to run through. The vertical pass at the right moment, the run that frees a teammate, the clean recovery, then the knack for slowing a match down or speeding it up whenever needed.
His importance became impossible to ignore.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or was the clearest proof of that. An individual award that crowned a defensive midfielder, which tells you plenty about the Spaniard’s influence on the global game.

A 70 million euro deal
Talks dragged on for several days before an agreement was struck on Monday. According to the figures around the deal, Barcelona will pay about 70 million euros to land Rodri.
That breaks down into 60 million euros up front and 10 million euros in add-ons.
A hefty fee, obviously. But Barca are not just buying a big name. They are bringing in a player who can add a new level to their midfield, with huge experience at the top end of the game and a deep understanding of Spanish football.
Rodri already knows what La Liga demands. Before Manchester City, he wore the shirts of Villarreal and Atletico Madrid. He now returns after seven seasons in England, but this time with a very different standing.
