Bundesliga: Fullkrug takes pay cut to rejoin Werder Bremen on loan

Bundesliga top scorer once, squad filler in London

Niclas Fullkrug left the Weserstadion three years ago as the leading scorer in the Bundesliga. Nothing since has come close. Two leagues, a big-money move to the Premier League and a slow slide down the West Ham pecking order later, the 33-year-old is a Werder Bremen player again.

The club confirmed the season-long loan on Tuesday.

He gave up money to get it done

Wages were the obstacle. Fullkrug removed it himself.

“I have never hidden the fact that Werder is a very special club for me,” he said in the club statement. “That is why I was ready to accept a pay cut so the loan could happen. It was important for me to play for Werder again. The talks with the board went well. I am really looking forward to joining Bremen and the Bundesliga.”

Players in the closing stretch of a contract do not usually hand salary back to drop into a smaller club. He did.

Twenty-four caps and a back-to-goal game Bremen have missed

Fullkrug has played 24 times for Germany. He is a target man in the old sense: holds the ball up, drags centre-backs around, turns up in the six-yard box when the cross arrives. Half the mid-table clubs in the division would take that profile tomorrow morning.

Whether the legs still match the reputation is the part nobody at the Weserstadion can answer yet. Bremen are tied in for one year and no more, so the risk sits mostly with the player. A quiet season here and the offers get thinner fast.
