MLB: Crow-Armstrong walks it off as Cubs take the Chicago derby

A walk-off to end the Chicago derby

Pete Crow-Armstrong opened the game with a home run. He finished it the same way. Under the lights at Wrigley Field, the center fielder led off the 10th inning with a two-run blast that handed the Chicago Cubs a 7-5 win over the White Sox.

The ball came off a 2-1 slider from Hagen Smith and disappeared toward the right-field terrace. First walk-off of Crow-Armstrong’s career. The Cubs now have 12 this season, most in the majors.

His line tells the rest: 4-for-5, a double, two homers, three RBIs, a stolen base. The leadoff shot was his fifth of the year out of the top spot.

Nobody in 150 years of Cubs baseball had done this

The second homer carried more weight. It was his 30th of the season, one shy of the career best he set last year. With 31 steals already banked, the Chicago outfielder has locked up a second straight 30-30 campaign.

No Cub had ever managed that. Not in a century and a half of franchise baseball, on a list that includes Sammy Sosa, Ryne Sandberg and Ernie Banks.

All of which puts Crow-Armstrong squarely in the National League MVP conversation with six weeks of regular season left to keep the pressure on.

What Monday night did to the standings

The Cubs snapped a two-game skid. The White Sox saw a three-game winning run end. Game two of the derby comes Tuesday night, and the North Side now holds the edge.

For bettors, Crow-Armstrong stays one of the more interesting names on the player-props board. A hitter who can leave the yard in his first trip to the plate and swipe a bag in the same game opens up angles most sluggers never touch.
