NFL: Cam Vaughn out at Miami with no explanation given

Six words on the radio

“I wish him the best.” That was the whole statement. Mario Cristobal went on WQAM on Monday morning, confirmed that Cam Vaughn is no longer with the Hurricanes, and moved straight to the next question.

No reason given. No timeline, no incident, nothing. The segment lasted seconds.

Vaughn arrived in Coral Gables during the offseason and never played a down in the uniform.

1,344 yards and nowhere to put them

He is not some walk-on. Vaughn spent 2023 and 2024 at Jacksonville State before transferring to West Virginia for 2025, where he pulled in 35 catches for 541 yards and four touchdowns across 12 games.

The full college line reads 83 receptions, 1,344 yards and nine scores in 29 games. That works out to 16.2 yards a catch, which tells you what kind of receiver he is. Not the guy you send on a three-yard slant.

Miami signed him to deepen a thin receiver room. Weeks before the season opens, that room is thin again.

The portal, and a hard sell

The transfer portal is the obvious next step. The complication is obvious too. Someone has to take a player cut loose by a Power Four program that will not say why, and that is a conversation every recruiting coordinator in the country will want to have privately first.

Cristobal has already stopped taking questions about it.
