MLB : Noah Cameron tosses first complete game

MLB : Noah Cameron tosses first complete game

115 pitches, one hit

Noah Cameron threw the first complete game of his career on Sunday afternoon in Anaheim. The Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-0 in the deciding game of a three-game set.

The left-hander retired the first 15 batters he faced. A perfect game was still alive through five. The first walk came in the sixth, to Oswald Peraza. The first hit came in the seventh: a soft bloop from Vaughn Grissom that dropped between left and centre with one out on the board.

Final line: one hit, one walk, eight strikeouts. 115 pitches, 73 for strikes. The last out belonged to Mike Trout.

A second gem in three weeks

This was no fluke. On July 30, Cameron had already allowed just one hit over eight scoreless innings against the Minnesota Twins. He just did not finish the job that night.

His 7-8 record says very little about his season. Kansas City do not score much. Complete games are almost extinct in the modern MLB, where managers yank their starters before they have even seen the order a third time. That Cameron was left out there until the final pitch, after 115 throws, tells you plenty about what he had going that day. It was also his first career appearance at Angel Stadium.

A road series win at last

Michael Massey (3 for 4) and Bobby Witt Jr. each homered. Three runs in all, nothing more was needed. Cameron gave them exactly what they wanted.

The key detail for Kansas City: this was their first road series win since June 4-7 in Minnesota. Two and a half months of waiting. For the Angels, Ryan Johnson (2-7) gave up two runs on five hits in five and one-third innings.

The Royals head home from California with a pitcher who just reminded them why he is in the rotation.
