MLS: Messi penalty saved as Nashville tear Inter Miami apart

Twelve shots to two, and that was just the first half

Brian Schwake guessed right. Messi went to his left, the Nashville keeper was already there, and Inter Miami’s night unravelled from that moment on. Nashville won 4-1.

Andy Najar had opened the scoring in the 17th minute, heading in an Elias Saad cross for his first of the season. Nashville had already forced four saves before that one finally went in.

The penalty came six minutes later, Maxwell Woledzi hauling down Luis Suarez in the area. Messi took it. Schwake saved it. Still 1-0.

Telasco Segovia did drag Miami level in first-half stoppage time, slaloming through three defenders inside the box before beating Schwake for his third of the campaign. The half-time shot count told a different story though: 12 to 2, five on target to two.

Mukhtar and Surridge turn a game into a rout

Four minutes after the restart, Saad picked out Hany Mukhtar in the box. Left-footed finish from the left channel, 2-1, and a seventh goal of the season for the German.

Sam Surridge made it three in the 56th minute after Cristian Espinoza slid him in. Twelve goals now, more than anyone else at the club this year.

The fourth was almost cruel. Schwake launched a long ball forward in the 63rd minute, Rocco Rios Novo slipped as he came off his line, and Mukhtar rolled it into an empty net.

Saad left with two assists. Schwake left with four saves and a penalty stop.

Miami’s unbeaten run dies after three and a half months

Inter Miami had not tasted defeat since 2 May. Seven games unbeaten, gone. Four goals conceded matches their worst of the season.

Nashville sit on 13 wins, two losses and four draws for 43 points, the best record in the league, and their own two-game winless run is over.

Miami are second on 38 points from 19 matches. Five points back with the Supporters’ Shield still on the table, and Nashville are not slowing down.
