Golf: Yubol and Schubert share the Portland lead, both chasing a first LPGA win

Two players tied at 16 under, neither has won before

Between them, Arpichaya Yubol and Sophia Schubert have zero LPGA Tour titles. One of them may not be able to say that by Sunday evening.

The Thai and the American share the lead at the Standard Portland Classic, two clear of everyone else at 16 under.

Yubol’s 68 on Saturday was her worst round of the week, which says something after two 66s. Three birdies in her opening seven holes, two more at 10 and 11, one bogey at 15, then three straight pars to sign off.

“I would just say I’m pretty excited,” said the 24-year-old. “I haven’t been focused on the score. I’m just trying to do my best with my game, control my driver, my putter, everything.”

Schubert’s four in a row at Columbia Edgewater

Schubert went one better with a 67. Seven birdies, two bogeys, and a clean stretch from the 5th through the 12th that included four birdies in a row.

“I’m looking forward to playing with her again,” the 30-year-old said of Yubol. “We had a great day. She’s nice to play with. I don’t know exactly what it’ll take, but for me it’ll be about staying patient and calm and trying to keep smiling.”

Thitikul is two back with eight birdies in her pocket

World number two Jeeno Thitikul sits third at 14 under. Her 67 came with eight birdies and three bogeys, which is one way to shoot a number.

Narin An is fourth at 13 under after a 66.

Jiwon Jeon matched that 66 and shares fifth at 12 under with Minami Katsu (67), Chella Choi (67), Chanettee Wannasaen (67), Manon De Roey (68) and Erika Hara (69).

Mariel Galdiano led after day one. She is now tied 16th at 10 under following a 70.
