WNBA: Citron’s 21 sinks the sliding Sparks in Washington

Four threes in 21 tries, and Sonia Citron made all of them

Washington shot 4 for 21 from behind the arc. Every single one of those makes belonged to Sonia Citron, who went 4 of 5 herself.

She finished with 21 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds as the Mystics beat Los Angeles 80-70 overnight in the capital. The Sparks had led 58-55 going into the fourth. Washington then ran off a 25-12 quarter and that was the game.

The shooting split tells you why. Mystics: 9 of 14 in the period. Sparks: 3 of 12, with six turnovers thrown in. Tight game to that point, and then it was not.

Sixty of eighty points came from the paint

Kiki Iriafen put up 19 and 8, with 14 of those points before halftime. Shakira Austin went for 17 and 11.

The number that hurts Los Angeles most: 60 of Washington’s 80 points came in the paint. Three quarters of the offense, right at the rim. The Mystics also won the boards 43-27.

Eighth win in 10 for Washington, now 20-14 and back in the playoff conversation with the schedule getting heavier.

Eleven losses in 13 games for Los Angeles

Rae Burrell scored 20 for the Sparks. Nneka Ogwumike added 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Dearica Hamby had 11 points and 3 steals before fouling out.

Los Angeles were missing Cameron Brink, who took a shot to the ribs on Thursday against New York. Inside, it showed.

Four straight defeats now. Eleven losses in their last 13. At 12-22 the Sparks are running out of season.

There was a moment, though. Wheeler and Burrell put together a 13-2 run early in the third to move Los Angeles in front 52-43. Washington replied with eight unanswered and took the lead back for good.
