MLB: Arenado goes deep twice as D-backs bury Atlanta

Twenty homers, and the 26th multi-homer night of a long career

Nolan Arenado has been doing this since 2013. He did it again in Atlanta.

The third baseman hit two home runs last night as the Arizona Diamondbacks ran over the Braves 10-3 to take the three-game series. He went 2-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored and four RBIs, a two-run shot in the third and a solo blast in the seventh.

Number 20 on the year. Second multi-homer game of the season, 26th of his career.

Eleven straight retired, and Rodriguez is now 12-4

Eduardo Rodriguez gave up two runs before he had really settled into anything. Then he stopped giving up anything at all.

The left-hander went six innings, five hits, five strikeouts, no walks. He sat down 11 hitters in a row between the second and the fifth. Five wins in his last seven road starts.

Grant Holmes had no such night. Atlanta’s starter lasted 3 2/3 innings and gave up six runs, the worst total of his career, on six hits and three walks. His last loss before this one came on June 22.

Acuna opens the scoring, then the game gets away from Atlanta

Ronald Acuna Jr. led off with a 429-foot drive to center. His 13th of the year, the 199th of his career, the 40th he has hit as a leadoff man.

Atlanta tacked on another straight away. Drake Baldwin doubled, Matt Olson moved him over, Michael Harris II brought him in on a grounder.

Then Arizona took the thing over. Three in the second on RBI singles from Tim Tawa and Ryan Waldschmidt, three more in the third with Arenado’s first homer in the middle of it. Gabriel Moreno went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Ildemaro Vargas closed it out with a three-run shot in the ninth, and the Diamondbacks finished with 13 hits.

Arizona lead the season series 4-2.
