Football: Owusu and Baribo trade goals in Montreal draw

Owusu from the spot, Baribo from the air

Prince Owusu scored from the penalty spot. Tai Baribo answered with his head. CF Montreal and visiting D.C. United finished 1-1 in Montreal overnight, with each side’s leading scorer settling the matter inside 20 minutes of each other.

Keisuke Kurokawa handled in the area in the 49th minute. Owusu took the kick a minute later and put it in just under the bar for his 11th goal of the season.

Baribo levelled in the 67th. Kimito Nono crossed, Baribo climbed above the defence and headed the ball up and over Thomas Gillier for his 12th, stretching his scoring run to five straight matches.

Montreal had the better of the first half and nothing to show for it

The hosts controlled possession before the interval and managed two shots on target. Owusu should have scored in the 17th minute after Hennadii Synchuk found him, but Sean Johnson saved. Johnson kicked away another Owusu effort in the 33rd, again created by Synchuk. Synchuk then put his own chance over the bar in the 37th.

None of it went in. The sides went to the break level and the game only broke open after it.

What the point changes

D.C. United move to 5-5-9 and 24 points. The Black-and-Red have not lost in six matches (1-0-5) and have taken something from 11 of their last 12. Their all-time regular-season record in Montreal now reads 4-7-6.

Montreal sit on 17 points at 4-10-5. Points in back-to-back matches counts as progress of a kind, but the last actual win came on May 9, a 2-0 result against Orlando City, and the wait continues.

The two clubs had already met this season, a 4-4 draw in Washington on May 23. That fixture produced eight goals. This one produced two, and the second half accounted for both.

Wednesday brings Columbus away for Montreal and New England at home for D.C. United.
