NFL: Cowboys smother Seattle 17-7 in preseason opener

Seven points, then nothing

Seattle scored first. And that was about the extent of what the Seahawks managed on the night at Lumen Field.

Drew Lock set things up the right way to start. A solid drive, two Dallas penalties to help it along, runs from Lock himself and George Holani to move the chains, and Montorie Foster Jr. finishing it off in the end zone. Seven-nil. The crowd bought in.

After that, nothing. Over the next three and a half quarters, the defending champions did not put another point on the board.

The Cowboys defense slammed the door

The numbers are ugly. Seattle finished with 156 total yards. Just 76 through the air. In a full game.

The turning point came in the fourth quarter, with a goal-line stand that killed any real debate. After that, there was barely anything left to play for.

Yes, it is preseason. Starters get 20 minutes, the rotations never stop, and nobody shows the full hand in August. We all know the script. Still, 76 passing yards over an entire night is not something you just stumble into.

Camden Brown made his night count

Dallas’ two touchdowns carried the same signature: Camden Brown.

Games like this in preseason are not played in front of the national cameras for no reason. Final roster spots are won exactly here, off two plays nobody saw coming. Brown took his chances.

Then there is that franchise stat: the Cowboys had not won their preseason opener since 2017. A streak that had been hanging around for years and had stopped being a talking point because it had turned into a joke.

It is over now. It means nothing for the season. But in Dallas, they will take it.
