MLB: Zac Veen drives one into the bay

The ball ended up in the water

There are home runs, and then there are the ones that land in San Francisco Bay.

Zac Veen delivered the latter at Oracle Park on Monday night. Sixth inning, a walk to Connor Norby moments earlier, and the ball sailed well over the right-field wall before splashing into the water. Colorado beat the Giants 5-2 and got its three-game road trip off to a strong start.

It was Veen’s second home run in two starts since his call-up from Triple-A Albuquerque. Two games, two balls launched a long way. The young outfielder has wasted no time backing up the promotion.

Freeland goes eight without blinking

The real story of the night came on the mound. Kyle Freeland worked eight innings, allowing just four hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

The key moment came on one play. End of the fourth, Freeland picked off Osleivis Basabe. From there, he retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced. The only runner to reach, Andrew Knizner on a walk in the fifth, was wiped out by a Christian Koss double play.

Over the full game, Freeland faced only two batters with runners in scoring position. His personal record improves to 4-10, a number that says far more about Colorado’s season than his own work.

Six hits was enough

Troy Johnston opened the scoring in the fourth with a triple that brought in TJ Rumfield. Bryce Eldridge answered straight away with his 13th home run of the season. Colorado then jumped back in front in the fifth, as Brett Sullivan doubled and Mickey Moniak drove in the run with two outs.

The Rockies finished with only six hits. Three went for extra bases. Their final run came on a Willi Castro sacrifice fly in the ninth. Brennan Bernardino gave up a run late after a Jonah Cox triple and a Rafael Devers double.

Landen Roupp was pulled after 5 innings and two-thirds, charged with four runs. The Giants fell to 2-5 on a nine-game homestand, even though they out-hit their opponents 7-6. Colorado, meanwhile, has now strung together three straight wins for only the fourth time this season.
