MLS: Nashville host Miami with top spot on the line

Two-week wait for a showdown

Nashville SC host Inter Miami in the early hours of Saturday into Sunday. Top spot in the Eastern Conference is on the line.

Both clubs come back from a 15-day break for the Leagues Cup. The record is the same and not much to brag about: one win, two defeats against LIGA MX opponents, and no place in the quarter-finals. The league is back.

Nashville arrive with the best record in the league, 12 wins, 2 defeats and 4 draws for 40 points. Two points clear of the reigning champions.

“When you play Miami, you always need a big team effort,” B.J. Callaghan warned. His message is simple enough: “We now have one clear target, the MLS season. Finish as high as we can in the standings.”

Best defence meets best attack

The matchup is nice and clear. Nashville have conceded only 14 goals this season, a league-best total in MLS. Miami share top spot in the scoring charts with 45 goals.

Nashville’s goalkeeper is Brian Schwake. A rookie, with eight clean sheets this season. He should be busy. Up front, Sam Surridge leads the line with 11 goals, while Hany Mukhtar has chipped in with six.

For Miami, Lionel Messi tops the club stats with 12 goals and 8 assists in 15 matches. Luis Suárez follows on 10 goals, German Berterame on 7. Casemiro, who arrived on 22 July, rounds out a squad that has not lost a regular-season game since 2 May.

A game worth double

Nashville have not played in MLS since 1 August, when they drew 2-2 away at D.C. United. It was a reminder that the league’s best record can look pretty fragile.

The two teams meet again on 12 September in Florida. In other words, this fight for first in the East may not be settled tonight. But one club will come out of the weekend with a five-point cushion, the other a point behind. The gap is small. The stakes are not.
