Detroit Tigers celebrate a 6-4 MLB win over the Cleveland Guardians

MLB: Tigers edge Guardians as McGonigle drives in three

McGonigle carries the load

Kevin McGonigle picked the right night to take over. The Detroit infielder drove in three runs against Cleveland, a two-run double and an RBI single doing the damage, and the Tigers walked off their home stand with a 6-4 win over the Guardians.

Detroit has turned a quiet summer into a surge. This was the club’s eighth win in its last 10 games. Javier Baez crossed the plate twice and kept the lineup ticking over, giving the Tigers the kind of steady night that has become their habit.

The bullpen holds

Jacob Waguespack settled things in the middle innings. The reliever threw two scoreless frames and picked up the win, handing a lead to the back end of the pen. Kenley Jansen made it interesting in the ninth, surrendering a run before locking down his 14th save.

Cleveland did not go quietly. Chase DeLauter collected three hits, including a solo home run, and looked like the Guardians’ most dangerous bat all night. Jo Adell drove in two runs and connected for his first homer since arriving from the Los Angeles Angels at the trade deadline.

What it means

Eight wins in 10 games is the mark of a team playing its best baseball of the season. Detroit leaned on balance again, a big night from one hitter and enough length from the bullpen to carry it home. For Cleveland, another productive night at the plate ended without a result. Jo Adell’s first homer in a Guardians shirt was the sort of moment the club hoped for when it traded for him last month.
