Chicago eventually wore them down
A messy start, then a long grind. The Chicago Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 8-6 on the road last night, and they earned every bit of it.
Down early, Chicago kept its nerve and chipped away, scoring in five straight innings. The comeback turned on a Carson Kelly grounder that pushed home the run for a 4-3 lead. From that point on the Cubs never trailed again.

Three homers made the difference
The power bats carried the night. Pete Crow-Armstrong, Alex Bregman and Seiya Suzuki each cleared the fence, three swings that reshaped the game. The decisive stretch came in a four-run fourth that finally gave Chicago room to breathe. Washington kept pushing, and never quite drew level.
Crow-Armstrong is the engine right now. The young center fielder is stringing together the kind of nights that turn heads around the league, and Bregman keeps supplying the veteran punch alongside him.
Closing in on 70
The win nudges the Cubs toward 70 on the season, one more step in a climb that has been anything but smooth. Grabbing it in Washington, against a team that refused to fold, is the sort of result that tends to matter more in October than it does in August.
